Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comments form and may also collect the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help with spam detection and security. We retain comment content and associated metadata (such as timestamps) so we can moderate, identify and manage follow-up comments efficiently.

An anonymised string created from your email address (a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to check whether you are using that service. The Gravatar privacy policy is available at https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture (if any) may be visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, avoid including embedded location data (EXIF GPS) in those images. Visitors to the website can download images and extract any embedded metadata, including location information.

Cookies

We use cookies and similar technologies for site functionality, security and convenience.

  • Comment cookies: If you leave a comment on our site, you may opt in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These cookies are for your convenience so you do not have to re-enter your details when you leave another comment. These cookies last for one year.
  • Login cookies: If you visit our login page, we set a temporary cookie to determine whether your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser. When you log in, we set cookies to save your login session and screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days; screen options cookies last for one year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login persists for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies are removed.
  • Post-editor cookie: If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie is saved in your browser that includes the post ID of the article you edited. It contains no personal data and expires after one day.
  • Functional and analytics cookies: We may use other cookies to provide core site functions and to understand site usage (see “Cookies, tracking and analytics” in our main Privacy Policy). You can control cookies through your browser settings and by using ad‑blockers or privacy extensions; some site features may not function if cookies are disabled.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (for example, videos, images, and articles). Embedded content behaves in the same way as if you had visited the other website directly. Who we share your data with

We do not sell or lease personal information. We may share personal data in limited circumstances, including:

How long we retain your data

  • Comments: If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely so we can recognise and manage follow‑up comments automatically.
  • Registered users: For users who register on our site, we store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can view, edit or delete their personal information at any time, except they cannot change their username. Website administrators can also view and edit that information.
  • Other data: We retain other personal information only as long as necessary for the purpose it was collected for, to meet legal or regulatory obligations, or to resolve disputes and enforce our agreements. When data is no longer required, it will be securely deleted or de‑identified.

What rights you have over your data

Under the Privacy Act 2020 you have rights to:

  • Access: request access to personal information we hold about you.
  • Correction: request correction of personal information that is inaccurate, out of date, incomplete, irrelevant, or misleading.
  • Deletion / erasure: request that we delete or de‑identify your personal information where retention is not required by law or for legitimate business reasons.
  • Restrict processing: request that we stop or limit particular uses of your personal information (for example, for direct marketing).
  • Data portability: request an exported copy of personal data you have provided to us, where technically feasible.
  • Complain: complain to us about our handling of your personal information; if not satisfied, you may complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (New Zealand).

Where your data is sent

Visitor comments and other site content may be checked through automated spam detection services and security tools. We may send data to third‑party service providers located outside New Zealand (for example, hosting, analytics or email providers). Where personal information is transferred overseas, we take reasonable steps to ensure comparable protections to those required by the Privacy Act 2020 are in place (for example, contractual safeguards, security measures, or provider certifications). We will note significant overseas transfers in our main Privacy Policy.
